El Ceibo has a dynamic live set that is a can't-miss! Easy banter, incredible musicianship and vocal performances, all steeped in the rich folklore of Argentina. They are a must-see.”

— Phillip Vonesh, Toronto Folk Festival

I'm not sure if there are any groups in Canada who integrate chacarera, which is a popular folk music style from Argentina, in their music, but El Ciebo does it beautifully. They blend traditional Argentinian rhythms with contemporary Western influences to create a sound that’s distinctly their own. And they're great live!”

— Errol Nazareth, host of Frequencies on CBC Music, and host of Big City Small World on CBC Radio One

El Ceibo is an excellent musical project, ideal to connect with Argentinian music, which is hardly known abroad. Seeing them live is also a way to be immediately transported to Andean lands.”

— Silvia Véjar, Buenas Tardes Canadá

Bio

El Ceibo (pronounced Elle Say-Boh) is a dynamic five-piece ensemble that blends the rich tapestry of traditional Argentinian folk melodies with jazz harmonic and chamber music influences. Directed by Argentinian-Canadian percussionist Patricio Llovet, the Mississauga-based group has quickly established itself as a significant voice, earning airplay on CBC Radio 1 and Jazz FM. Following the independently released 2022 EP, El Ceibo has been featured on major stages, including the Toronto Jazz Festival and the Living Arts Centre.

Founded in 2019, El Ceibo is rooted in the deep cultural responsibility of preserving and reimaging the diverse folk traditions of Argentina—a repertoire vastly underrepresented in Canada. As one of the very few groups in the country dedicated to this art form, and the only known ensemble in Ontario to specifically showcase the traditions of zambas, chacareras, cuecas, and other regional styles with original arrangements, the group fills a crucial cultural space within Canada’s multicultural music scene. The core ensemble is composed of a collective of professional musicians, featuring vocals, guitar, charango, vocals, violin, and traditional percussion.

The ensemble’s approach to performance weaves traditional Argentinian musical textures with jazz rhythmic explorations and the precision of chamber music. Live shows are characterized by musicality, often including storytelling and educational elements that highlight the cultural history, language, and social context behind the music. This format honors tradition while actively building deep connections with new, diverse audiences.

Driven by the mission to keep Argentinian roots alive through performance and education, El Ceibo aims to contribute substantially to the rich diversity of Canada’s arts landscape. They continue to celebrate and innovate within this tradition, from major appearances at international conferences like Folk Alliance International to international music festivals and local music venues. The group is currently focused on composing music for their next album release (2027).
